Hosted by the University for Continuing Education Krems, the EU.ACE Living Lab Activity brought together experts from across Europe at the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) in Vienna’s Palais Rothschild. Participants explored how to establish interconnected Living Labs for smart communities, aligning with key priorities of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Key themes included:

  • Human-Centric Approach – Real-world testing and co-creation of solutions, in line with the Bologna Process emphasis on learner-centered education and innovation.
Balancing Perspectives – Integrating technical, social, and ethical dimensions, reflecting the European Commission’s focus on interdisciplinary skills development.
Avoiding ‘Living Lab Washing’ – Ensuring genuine stakeholder engagement, supporting the Skills and Talent Mobility agenda for inclusive education.
The Role of Stakeholders – Recognizing people as drivers of meaningful change, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to lifelong learning and digital transformation.
  • This initiative strengthens European cooperation in higher education, fostering innovative, transdisciplinary learning environments essential for the future of Smart Communities.
